Equality laws create a dilemma as to whether to disclose one’s illness (for legal protection) or attempt to conceal it (to avoid stigma or discrimination). Research suggests that those with concealable stigmas have lower self-esteem and more negative affect than those with visible stigmas, which may be related to such dilemmas and associated stress.
