[Trigger Warning: Psychiatric abuse]
It’s an unfortunate reality that negligence and abuse are very prevalent in the mental health care community compared to other medical professions. I think part of the reason is that these patients- similar to the elderly in nursing homes- are incredibly vulnerable, there is a serious lack of quality control, and they are believed to be too confused or disturbed to be taken seriously when in opposition to health care professionals so their voices silenced or ignored. Any other patient has clearer legal rights, they can choose to see another doctor, disagree with treatment, have more familial support and contact, and have precedented legal standing and credibility to sue for malpractice. I believe restraints can be very important and necessary for workers in psychiatric facilities, but I see no reason why there shouldn’t be a review process and stricter standards of use based at least in part upon patient testimonials. Some fucking surveillance cameras would be a good idea too.
