A few responses about the declassification of ‘Gender Identity Disorder’ as a mental illness:

When I worked in health insurance, we were told to just pay mental health claims for any disorder EXCEPT GID. We had to deny all of them.

Yay! We’ve finally caught up with where gays (saying this while also gay lol) were in 1973…

[In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. The American Psychological Association Council of Representatives followed in 1975. Thereafter other major mental health organizations followed and it was finally declassified by the World Health Organization in 1990.]

I’m just…I’m so happy that we’re taking this step! It’s a huge improvement from labeling it Gender Identity Disorder. It finally acknowledges the true emotions that a trans* person experiences with their body - dysphoria.

This is HUGE. It’ll definitely make a difference in the proper counselling for trans* individuals.

As a transsexual person I much prefer Gender Dysphoria to GID my GP started using GD as opposed to GID some time back and I appreciate it
