Father of mentally ill man allegedly beaten to death by police files lawsuit.

“Both officers have pleaded not guilty, maintaining that Thomas’s actions led to his death”

This is exactly why people with mental illness are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence and abuse: they are viewed as violent and/or with a poor grip on reality, likely to make things up or not be reliable in their testimony. Video and audio recordings of the murder depict Thomas crying out for help and - get this - apologising. It makes me sick to think that this man’s last breaths were spent apologising for being mentally ill and homeless - because there was no evidence that he was implicated in any crime.

I’m glad that this man’s father is pressing charges - he should be proud of his bravery in standing up to institutionalized discrimination and abuse of power.
