Hallucinations were experienced by 38.7% of participants in a sample from Britain, Germany and Italy, not including institutionalised peoples.
Hallucinations (particularly auditory) are actually very common in ‘healthy’ populations, especially following the death of a close friend or relative, or when exhausted.
