Male psychiatric patients "more likely to die" following cancer diagnosis
Provision of physical health care for people with mental health problems is a huge issue: on average, people with mental health problems have a life expectancy 5 to 10 years shorter than the general population, and no: that’s not just higher suicide rates bringing the average down. There are a myriad factors working together to influence this. For example, people with mental health problems have higher rates of respiratory cardiovascular and infectious diseases (this study found that “Persons with a mental disorder in the past month consumed approximately 44.3% of cigarettes smoked by this nationally representative sample.”). Also, we are less likely to benefit from mainstream screening and public health programs…
